What Are Braces and How Do Braces Work?

Braces are a type of orthodontic appliance that utilize a sophisticated system of brackets and wires to apply gentle and consistent pressure on your teeth. Your orthodontist will adjust your braces to shift your teeth into the desired position over time, resulting in a more beautiful and healthy smile.

Getting braces can help you improve the health and alignment of your smile, which has tons of benefits! Braces have undergone significant technological advancements, resulting in sleek and comfortable options that can boost your self-confidence, even throughout the treatment process.

At Carmen Orthodontics, we use custom braces which come with their own unique advantages beyond what traditional braces provide!

What Are Custom Braces?

Conventional braces come as stock brackets designed to fit everyone, but this doesn’t take into account each patient’s individual needs and can produce variability in desired outcomes. At Carmen Orthodontics, each bracket of our custom Lightforce Ceramic and KLOwen Stride braces is specifically tailored to match the unique dental structure of each individual patient with perfect precision.

To achieve this, we use cutting edge CADCAM technology to simulate the entire treatment, start to finish, which allows us to remove any variability or human error in the treatment process before treatment even begins! These computer-simulated outcomes are then used to build a custom treatment plan that uses brackets designed to accommodate the exact movements needed to achieve a perfect outcome for each unique patient. This precision means up to 50% shorter treatment times, fewer appointments, and ultimately more time back in your schedule.

Types of Braces Available At Carmen Orthodontics

At Carmen Orthodontics, we offer two different types of braces that leverage advanced orthodontic technology to create perfect smiles in record time– LightForce Clear Braces and KLOwen Stride Metal Braces.

LightForce braces use 3-D printed ceramic brackets designed to fit the unique surface of each individual tooth. This personalized approach can reduce discomfort, improve the straightening accuracy of your treatment, and reduce your overall treatment time. These ceramic braces are much less noticeable than metal braces, offering a great alternative for patients who aren’t candidates for clear aligners but still want a discreet and efficient treatment.

KLOwen braces use a combination of metal brackets that, like the ceramic braces mentioned above, are designed to fit the unique structure of each tooth. Each bracket is specifically chosen via computer simulation to provide the perfect torque and thickness required for your treatment, meaning a more efficient, and effective, path to results that greatly reduces the need for wire-bending or bracket repositioning! KLOwen braces far outperform the traditional metal braces of years past.

How Much Do Braces Cost?

The average cost of braces at our practice is typically between $5,500-$7,000. Because there’s no difference in price between the types of braces, you can be sure we’ll recommend the best option for your unique case! For cases where a more limited treatment is recommended, the cost of that treatment comes in at around $3,500.

Carmen’s Advanced Braces Treatment Process

Indirect Bonding

Indirect bonding is a method of placing braces that is more precise, comfortable, and time-efficient than traditional techniques. This approach allows all brackets to be placed simultaneously, reducing the duration of the initial session from over an hour to less than twenty minutes! In fact, because the process is so precise, your braces are positioned closer to the ideal placement from the start, leading to fewer office visits and shorter treatment times.

The Timeline

Building Your Custom Braces

The process begins with a digital scan of your teeth using our iTero scanner. That scan produces an incredibly precise 3D model of your teeth and gums which we’ll use to map out your treatment plan, determine the optimal placement of each bracket for each tooth, and create the unique bonding trays we’ll use during your braces fitting.

Setting Your Braces

Since your bonding trays are prepped and ready to go, placing your braces is a comfortable, stress-free experience that takes less than twenty minutes! During your fitting appointment, we’ll prepare your teeth with adhesive, then securely attach the trays to your teeth which allows the placement of all brackets at the same time instead of tooth-by-tooth. From there, all that’s left is to quickly bond your braces to your teeth using a special UV light, separate the trays, and your braces are set!

Adjustments To Your Braces

Typically, patients with braces need to schedule appointments every 6-8 weeks to have their braces adjusted. But when you get braces with Carmen Orthodontics, our efficient, customized treatment process means adjustment appointments are fewer and further between! We only need to see you every 8-12 weeks for adjustments.

During these appointments, we’ll check on your progress and make adjustments to your braces to ensure your teeth are moving into the desired position. While you don’t need as many adjustment appointments, it’s essential to keep up with necessary visits to achieve the best possible smile.

Removal of Dental Braces

Once your orthodontic treatment is successfully completed, it’s time to say goodbye to your braces. The process of removing them is quick, painless, and enjoyable as you get to admire your brand new, stunning smile.

We will then give you a retainer to keep your smile in place. Wearing a retainer is essential to make sure your smile doesn’t shift out of position over time! If you don’t wear a retainer, you’ll undo all the money and time that went into treatment in the first place. So, it’s important to wear your retainer as directed!

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children visit the orthodontist by age 7. By this age, your child has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to evaluate the developing teeth and jaws. Early orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, addresses orthodontic issues in children before all their permanent teeth have erupted. It can correct issues before they become more severe, and it can have a big impact on your child’s speech development and confidence.

There’s no hard and fast rule for how long braces take to work. The duration of the treatment may vary depending on the severity of your case, and other factors like your oral habits can also affect the timeline. On average, traditional braces treatment can take 1–3 years to complete, although the majority of standard treatments usually last around 18 months. However, with our custom KLOwen and LightForce braces, your treatment time can be reduced by up to 50 percent!

Consistently damaging your braces or failing to wear your rubber bands as instructed can significantly extend your treatment time. Additionally, missing scheduled appointments or frequently rescheduling, especially on short notice, can also delay your progress. It’s essential to follow your orthodontist’s instructions carefully and attend all scheduled appointments to ensure that your treatment stays on track and is completed as efficiently as possible.

Although it’s common to experience a bit of discomfort for a few days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth adjust to your new braces, they don’t cause significant pain. Any discomfort can be easily managed by NSAIDs, and by avoiding hard or chewy foods.

Absolutely! Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment should make it a priority to visit their dentist regularly. While wearing braces, it’s common for food particles to get trapped in hard-to-reach places, which can result in the buildup of bacteria and increase the risk of cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Scheduling regular dental checkups can help ensure you maintain good dental health.

If you’re a musician, singer, or athlete, it may take a little bit of time to get used to your braces. That being said, wearing braces won’t prevent you from participating in any extracurricular activities. If you play a contact sport, it’s advisable to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance from damage. Instrumentalists who play woodwinds or brasses may find it initially uncomfortable to play with braces. We recommend applying orthodontic wax to your braces to reduce friction. Plus, your music teachers probably have lots of tips on playing with braces! Singers may find that their diction is affected in the first few days of having braces, but this usually goes away on its own.

Yes! We recommend brushing your teeth at least three times a day to remove any food particles that may be caught between your braces. Regular brushing will help ensure that your smile stays beautiful throughout your orthodontic treatment. It’s also essential to floss daily to clean areas that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Cleaning and caring for braces is crucial for successful orthodontic treatment. Due to their intricate design, braces provide many hiding spots for food particles and harmful bacteria. If left unchecked, this can lead to plaque buildup, bad breath, tooth discoloration, cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay.

To prevent these problems, patients with braces need to maintain good oral hygiene habits and avoid foods that can cause damage. By following these tips and taking good care of your braces, you can help ensure successful treatment and a healthy, beautiful smile!

Following the dietary guidelines we recommend is essential to prevent damaging your braces and prolonging treatment time. To ensure successful treatment, steer clear of the following foods with teeth braces

  • Sticky or chewy foods, such as caramel, taffy, gummies, or chewing gum
  • Hard or crunchy foods, like hard candy, nuts, popcorn, ice, or corn on the cob
  • Tough or stringy foods, such as beef jerky or fibrous fruits and vegetables (like celery or carrots)
  • Foods you bite into directly with your front teeth, like apples, pears, or raw carrots
  • Sugary or acidic foods and drinks that can promote tooth decay or damage, like soda, sports drinks, fruit juice, or candy

We also advise patients to refrain from harmful habits such as biting fingernails, chewing on pencils or pens, or chewing on foreign objects. These activities can cause damage to your braces and should be avoided to protect your orthodontic treatment

Yes! Without a retainer, you risk your teeth shifting out of alignment. Wearing a retainer as directed protects your orthodontic investment and keeps your new smile in place for years to come.
